Eating Disorders
Eating issues are often the expression of underlying frustrations and conflicts that are requesting attention. "Listening" to these signals takes practice and learning.
Difficulties with food and weight are usually the expression of frustrations with one's life and/or other people and relationships in it. Eating disorders can range from full blown anorexia (an unrealistic preoccupation with weight loss and being thin) and bulimia (eating uncontrollably followed by attempts to rid oneself of food) to disordered eating (binge eating, restricted eating) to poor body image. It is difficult in this society to escape food issues. Resolving them requires working with "the whole picture", such as one's relationships, mood difficulties, coping skills, etc. Depending on the nature and extent of your problem, I collaborate with a team, consisting of a nutritionist, MD and psychiatrist as appropriate to help with all aspects of your recovery. We start with a complete assessment to get at the whole picture and make recommendations. Then, we develop a plan that might consist of a combination of group, family or couples and individual treatment, which includes a combination of Eastern and Western techniques. The goal is to heal your relationship with food, your body, and yourself.
